Camping in the Netherlands: surprisingly multi-faceted!

Campsites in the Netherlands are to be found in all parts of the country. The greatest attraction has traditionally been the North Sea coast. The Wadden islands in the north are also a popular destination for a beach holiday or a holiday in the middle of nature. Right behind the beaches are the beautiful dunes, perfect for long walks or cycle trips. There are however many campsites in the east and south of the Netherlands. Close to lakes (and not just in Friesland) and ponds and rivers, wherever you go you will see water! The centre and the east of the country in particular have extensive natural parks: the Drenthe heath and woods, the Limburg hills or the beautiful countryside in Gelderland and Brabant. The Veluwe with its Hoge Veluwe national park containing deer and wild boar is a beautiful and thinly populated area. If you are on a campsite in this part of the Netherlands be sure to visit the Kröller-Müller Museum of modern art in Otterlo. As well as the beautiful and varied countryside, the many large and small towns are typically Dutch. Not only should you visit the main cities of Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague (Den Haag) but you can enjoy the typical Dutch atmosphere of old towns such as Delft, Leiden, Alkmaar, Middelburg, Hoorn, Gouda, Maastricht or Volendam/Edam.
