An increasing number of people are travelling with their tent, caravan or campervan to this Eastern European country. Very small East European country. Because at 20,000 square metres, it is Europe’s smallest country. But that says nothing about its vast diversity. With its coastline, many rivers, unspoilt green forests and pleasant cities, Slovenia more that measures up to any other European holiday destination. I went in search of the five most important reasons to travel to Slovenia.

1. Lake Bled

In no time I come across Lake Bled, in the northwest of country. This truly is one of Slovenia’s prettiest and most unique locations. The crystal clear lake is set against a stunning mountainous landscape and has a small island in its centre. It sounds like a scene from a fairytale, and it is! You can lay out a towel on the banks and spend the afternoon enjoying the water, or cycle around the lake and visit the city of Bled and Bled Castle. And don’t forget to sample a Kremsnita (a local cake sold only in Bled) and enjoy the views from the vantage point in Bled. This is guaranteed to provide some beautiful holiday photos.

2. Ljubljana

The capital city Ljubljana has 300,000 inhabitants, making it Slovenia’s largest city. Running through its middle is the River Ljubljanica, also known as the city’s artery, along which you will find many restaurants, the central market and St. Nicholas’ Catehdral. From the riverbanks, you can also glimpse Ljubljana’s hilltop castle between the houses and tall buildings.

3. Piran

Very close to the border with Croatia is the town of Piran. The old part of this beautiful town is divided between the peninsula and the hill, and the coloured houses and medieval castle at the tip of the peninsula make Piran an idyllic location. The best way to explore the town is on foot.

The Italian influences in the centre are visible in the Venetian Gothic architecture. Walk across Tartini square, visit the cathedral of St. George or head to the top of the hill for great views across Piran. And if you have any energy left when you come down, the salt pans of Sečovlje Salina Nature Park are just 20 minutes by car and well worth a visit!

4. Triglav National Park

Looking for peace and quiet? Then visit Triglav National Park, one of the oldest national parks in Europe. The nature in this park is still unspoilt, partly because traffic is kept away from the area as much as possible. The park is famed for Triglav, the 2,864-metre-high mountain. While it is possible to reach the top, you’ll need to be a seasoned mountain hiker to do so. Keep your eyes peeled when walking, so you don’t miss the impressive rock formations, crystal clear lakes, waterfalls and emerald green rivers.

5. River Soca

I like my active city trips to be interspersed with lazy days by the water. And the River Soca is the perfect place to do just that in Slovenia. Winding through the west of the country and ideal for kayaking, canyoning and rafting adventures, the zip lines in the adjoining forests offer fantastic views of the river. Alternatively, of course, you can set off along the river on foot, which is just as nice!

Campsites in Slovenia

I recently heard that Slovenia is becoming more and more popular among campers.
