In order to admire its 100 piazzas, 150 canals, 400 bridges and dozens of outlying islands, you can of course choose a hotel in the city. Just as nice and practical is to stay at a luxury campsite close to Venice, making it the perfect base for one or more day trips to the city of water.

A day out in Venice

Sometimes you wish there were more than 24 hours in a day. There’s so much to see in Venice. St Mark’s Square, the Rialto Bridge, the Basilica and the Doge’s Palace are just some of this city’s many highlights. Anyone who is not content with all the sights of the city should add an extra dimension and go by boat to the two famous islands north of the city of water: Murano and Burano.

Murano: glass production

Take the vaporetti (water taxi) from the stop in St Mark’s Square and sail to Murano. Art lovers know this island for its glass production. Glass blowers who worked in thirteenth century Venice were forced to practice their craft elsewhere because of the risk of fire. They moved out in large numbers to Murano, an island just north of Venice. Visit Museo del Vetro to learn all about the art of glass blowing. To see a glass blower at work in his studio you will need to leave for Murano as early as possible; that’s when you’ll get the best chance.

Burano: colour and lace

You can sail further north from Murano to Burano. There’s not really much to do here, but that’s the charm of the place. You are far away from the crowds in big brother Venice. It will also put you in a good mood; Burano is famed for its colourful houses that make a cheerful picture. It also has a church that is well worth a visit. Just as Murano, this island has a famous export: lace. If you want to find out more about this you are most welcome in Museo del Consorzio Merletti di Burano.

Venice with children

Venice and the neighbouring islands are not just places for adults to enjoy themselves. Read all about fun activities that you can participate in with your children. And a place where children can have a lot of fun is a campsite!

That why we have selected three campsites where the whole family can balance a wonderfully relaxing camping holiday with an active day out in Venice. For example, book a comfortable glamping accommodation such as the SunLodge Aspen, the Maple or the Redwood. Here you enjoy a sleep in extra large beds, and the luxury of a well-equipped kitchen and a private bathroom!

Camping Village Marina di Venezia

If you like to stay close to the city, Camping Village Marina di Venezia is probably your best option. Located on the Cavallino Treporti headland you are camping just seven kilometres from St Mark’s Square as the crow flies. Walk to the beach where you can see the city when the weather is clear … To get to Venice you can take the campsite minibus to the ferry’s departure point (Punta Sabbioni). The crossing takes no more than forty minutes. You disembark at the Palazzo Ducale. During the journey you can admire the Biennale gardens which you sail very close to.

Campsite San Francesco

Campsite San Francesco is further away from Venice, but close to the charming fishing village of Caorle. You can get to the car park near the famous canal city in under an hour by car. From here you can take a water taxi to transport you into the city. But there’s plenty to see within walking distance, especially if you have good legs. If you camp at San Francesco, you can be sure that you can relax after a busy day in Venice, maybe on an airbed in the swimming pool or lying back in the whirlpool.

Campsite Pra’delle Torri

Campsite Pra’delle Torri is not far from San Francesco. The wooded grounds are in sharp contrast to the nearby beach and the sea. From here it’s also about a one-hour drive to the car park close to Venice. Tip: read in advance which are the best places to park your car. Once in the city you will be amazed by the beautiful canals, bridges and houses. Unfortunately ‘La Serenissima’ doesn’t have much greenery, but thankfully you’ll be camping at Pra’delle Torri in a parkland setting with the beautiful colours of the trees, bushes and flowers almost everywhere.

What are you waiting for?

Click below and discover what other things there are to experience at these campsites.
