Campsite Vechtdal Netherlands
Campsites in the Vechtdal (Valley of the River Vecht) are situated in some of the Netherlands’ most beautiful countryside. The Vechtdal is in the eastern Dutch province of Overijssel (the river originates in Germany, where it is called the Vechte — not to be confused with the River Vecht between Utrecht and Amsterdam), and you’ll appreciate the calm and open space it offers. On holiday here, you can have some lovely hiking and cycling excursions from your campsite. Vechtdal includes some varied routes through the most beautiful corners of Overijssel province. Make a beeline to discover this gorgeous corner of the Netherlands!
Campsites in the Vechtdal: much to enjoy from your campsite
The river here, the Overijsselse Vecht to give it its full Dutch name, separates the province of Drenthe (which begins a few miles north of the river’s course) from the Twente region of Overijssel to the south. The area along its banks is the Vechtdal. Campsites in the Vechtdal, then, are never far from the natural beauty around this river and the surrounding Salland Hills. These are places for relaxation and recreation.
One of the ways to do just that in the Vechtdal is to enjoy some lovely hiking through the woods and across the heathland. There is a popular walking route here called the Vechtdalpad. This area is also excellently suited to countryside cycling.
Sights around your campsite
Country houses, castles and areas of natural beauty are all waiting to be discovered near your campsite. Vechtdal is not just raw nature: there are lots of man-made sights well worth making a day trip out of.
- Kasteel Het Nijenhuis
Nijenhuis Castle is a fine-looking fortress now set up as a museum, and at any given time it will be showing a number of major exhibits: you might just happen upon a Van Gogh. The statue garden (beeldentuin) is not to be missed.
- Picturesque towns
The small towns of Hardenberg and Ommen are just two of the nicest to visit from your campsite. Ommen used to be in the Hanseatic League and has a rich history and a lively centre. If you’re after some shopping, Hardenberg is a good bet.
- Get on the river
If you find yourself feeling like some fun on the water while camping in the Vechtdal, the canoeing here is good, with no shortage of great routes to paddle. Just ask at your campsite where you can hire a canoe locally.
- Amusement parks
There are several amusement parks at hand when you’re on a camping holiday in the Vechtdal. Slagharen, with over 40 different rides and attractions, has something for everyone.
