Where are you headed this spring?

7 April, 2020 | Update: 27/01/2023

Spring is the perfect time for a holiday. Southern Europe is already lovely and warm, but not too hot yet. And things are already ramping back up at the campsites. At Easter, Whitsun, and of course over the May bank holidays, plenty of holidaymakers head off to their favourite campsite. And don’t forget, springtime camping holidays are usually cheaper than in high season. Many family campsites already have entertainment teams gearing up with fun activities for kids as early as the spring holidays. There’s guaranteed fun for everyone.

May on the Mediterranean

An endless sandy beach, a huge water park with heated indoor and outdoor pools, and charming towns nearby. Not bad, right? Particularly when you remember that in May, temperatures can already reach a balmy twenty degrees on the Mediterranean. It’s ideal weather for relaxing on the beach, but also perfect for a jaunt into the city. At Camping Sandaya Domaine de la Dragonnière, you don’t have to choose. This luxury campsite is located four kilometres from the sea. The most dedicated water bugs can take a crisp spring dive into the sea, but if you prefer the swimming pool, you won’t be short on choice. There is plenty to do here for young and old with entertainment, a spa and several restaurants and bars.

Nearby you’ll find the charming town of Cap d’Agde with a vibrant boulevard, fabulous shops and restaurants, and a marina. The beautiful historic towns of Beziers (14 kilometres from the campsite) and Montpellier (66 kilometres from the campsite) also come highly recommended!

A romantic trip to Barcelona

Have you ever heard of the Dia de Saint Jordi? This holiday, celebrated on 23 April each year, is also called the Catalan Valentine’s Day. Men give women a red rose and in return, women give men a book. If you’re in Barcelona, you can’t miss it. Roses and bookstalls pop up all over the city and houses are decked out with lavish rosy decorations. It’s the perfect excuse for a springtime city trip to Barcelona.

Barcelona

Combine your camping holiday with a romantic trip to Barcelona

There are several lovely seaside campsites near Barcelona, they’re already open at Easter and Whitsun and are right on the coast! For example, Vilanova Park is just fifty kilometres from Barcelona. In less than an hour, you can be in the popular Catalan metropolis on the Mediterranean Sea. Whether you like shopping, art and architecture, or good food, Barcelona has it all. And it’s a wonderful place to unwind in the evening after a full day in the city.

The convenience of a luxury mobile home

If you’d prefer a short camping/city trip in the spring, you don’t want to spend too much time packing and organising. If that sounds like you, glamping might be a good option, where you can rent accommodations like a SunLodge. These luxury mobile homes are designed to let you start your holiday as soon as you walk through the door. The beds are already made and the coffeemaker and lounge chairs are ready and waiting. All you have to do is dig out your swimsuit and dive into the pool.

Dolphin spotting in Croatia

Did you know you can go dolphin spotting in Croatia? A group of about 180 wild dolphins make their home off the coast of the island of Lošinj. With a bit of luck, you can see them swimming from the campsite, but you can also book a special dolphin excursion to the Lošinj Dolphin Sanctuary. The Dolphin Watching excursions start in the spring. A boat will take you out to sea to meet these special animals. The trip can take anywhere from one to three hours, as wild animals don’t exactly follow a schedule. But if you see them, there’s a good chance that they’ll come up to the boat, because dolphins are naturally curious. You may even hear their characteristic clicking and whistling sounds. It’s a truly unique experience! After the excursion, you can learn more about the extraordinary underwater world of Lošinj at the Marine Education Centre.

Lovely camping on Lošinj

Excited about the dolphin excursion? Poljana Campsite is just eight kilometres from the excursion location on the sun-drenched island of Lošinj. This is a top bank holiday destination, as it’s around twenty degrees in May. It’s the perfect place to soak up the sunshine and join in plenty of fun activities, all from your home base at Poljana Campsite. It’s nestled in a unique spot between two beautiful bays. Do you love snorkelling, surfing, or diving and appreciate a beautiful seascape? Then Poljana is ideal for you. You can also rent boats here yourself. Who knows, you might spot some dolphins on your own excursion!

Preparing

Considering a camping holiday for Easter, Whitsun, or the May bank holidays? Do check to make sure the activities you’re interested in will be available. Many campsites already have plenty for the little ones to do in spring, but some campsites kick off their entertainment teams a bit later in the year, around the end of May or June. Ask Suncamp or check with the campsite for more information. Have your heart set on dinner at that one special restaurant near your campsite? Then it might be wise to make a reservation in advance. Are there amusement parks or water parks near the campsite you’re hoping to visit? Then check the opening season, so you won’t be surprised at the gates. With a little planning, your spring holiday is sure to be a success!

  • I grew up camping. The tent was pitched every year in beautiful places in the Netherlands and Belgium. I like active or relaxing holidays in the countryside best. Preferably at a campsite by a lake or river with a view of the mountains. For me, a day in the city is always part of a holiday.
