Campsites Lake Balaton: camping by the water

Lake Balaton is on average about 3 metres (10 foot) deep. Thus the water temperature in summer quickly rises to 25ºC degrees! So holidaying at Lake Balaton is a real treat for water sports lovers.

You can go swimming, sailing, rowing or pedalo boating! Both experienced water sporters and beginners can also enjoy wakeboarding or water skiing here. With approximately 296 km of coastline there are plenty of places where you can go sunbathing.

The swim across Lake Balaton (5.2 km) is an annual summer event that is becoming increasingly popular. This swimming competition begins on the north bank at Révfülöp and finishes on the south shore at Balatonboglár. Afterwards there is always a great party with music.

You can choose to camp in your own tent or caravan, but on some campsites by Lake Balaton you can also rent a bungalow or mobile home. Many camping sites also have a swimming pool.

Excursions from the campsite: Siófok, Veszprém and Tihany

There are many interesting day trips to be made from your campsite to interesting towns and villages that surround Lake Balaton. We recommend these:

  • Siófok
Siófok is the largest resort on Lake Balaton and is also known as the party capital of Hungary. Siófok has beautiful sights, like the old 45 metre high water tower on Szabadság Square.
  • Veszprém
Veszprém is both an area and a historical city. The most interesting part is the old town with the Vár (fortress). Among other sights there is the impressive Baroque style episcopal palace and the 13th-century Gothic chapel, Gisela.
  • Tihany
Tihany is located on the peninsula of the same name, which is a nature reserve where fine walks can be had. A charming church built in 1055 perches on the highest point of the town at 120 meters above lake level. And of course it offers a beautiful view over the region.

A visit to the Hungarian capital Budapest should not be missed during your holiday at Lake Balaton. At a 2-hour drive away at most, depending on your campsite, there are countless attractions to be enjoyed. Just one important one is the parliament building, an architectural masterpiece on the left bank of the Danube. There are also several spa baths in the city where you can unwind.
