Campsites Loire Valley: camping by a gorgeous river

The fine campsites along the Loire are guaranteed to be a place where you will have a fantastic holiday. The impressive Loire, a river of wild temperament, flows past vineyards and through green rolling hills that man has not ruined. Hardly surprising, then, that a 260-kilometre stretch of the Loire has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In the Loire region, you can come camping in your own tent or caravan, but you can also rent a mobile home or holiday home at some campsites on the Loire. Something of particular interest to those with children is that most campsites in this area have their own swimming pool and playground.

Sights in the Loire Valley

There will be plenty to see and do right around your campsite: the Loire Valley is known for its abundance of cultural sights.

  • Loire chateaus
Chambord, with its staggering 440 rooms, is absolutely not to be missed. Another truly outstanding chateau is Chenonceau, built on the banks of the river Cher. You’re not exactly going to run out of other day trip options, given that there are 140 Renaissance chateaus around here!
  • Hiking and cycling
Around a campsite on the Loire, there’s always some great hiking and cycling to be had. The Loire Valley hosts the extremely popular La Loire à Vélo (‘The Loire by Bike’) route, which among other highlights — in fact, it includes the most beautiful spots of the whole region — will lead you through the Loire-Anjou-Touraine natural park.
  • City trips to Orléans and Blois
Blois is where France’s most powerful kings held court: here, you’ll be plunged into a magical environment, and the old town centre even has secret cubbyholes to discover! Orléans is another local city overflowing with art and heritage: here, head for the enchanting Gothic cathedral, Sainte-Croix, and to La Source, a park-sized flower garden.

Having done some or all of this, it’s time for you to relax to the max at your campsite along the Loire. How better to do so than with a renowned local dry wine, such as Pouilly-Fumé or Sancerre? These and some culinary treats will turn your Loire holiday into a right royal feast!
